Review of the Webley Tomahawk air rifle

By Geoff Boxall (Airgunner Magazine)
The pressure was really on me, this month! I  was privileged to be the first person of the airgun press to be granted a day on the test range with the brand new break-barrel from Webley - and I'd promised the editor that I'd have a report on his desk within hours of my test!
That actually had to be the case, because the editor was literally 'holding the presses' to give me time to file my findings - but as you're not staring at blank pages, I can assume that we all finally made the grade!
And that's exactly what I'd say about the new Webley Tomahawk, too - the name for the preproduction prototype that I - and, therefore,
you -was lucky enough to see before anyone else outside of the Webley works! Project Tomahawk has been one of the closest guarded secrets that the Webley camp have been working on for the past years - and they've even installed state-of-the-art, high-tech computerised CNC machinery to make it all happen! In these days of 'pneumania', it's very reassuring to see that Britain's oldest-established gunmaker hasn't forgotten its roots - and the Tomahawk's no-nonsense, break-barrel design and easy cocking/loading procedure will be applauded by every shooter who likes his airgunning to be fuss-free and hard-hitting.
As you can probably tell from these first-ever photographs, the Tomahawk has got that unmistakable Webley 'look' about it. Modern-day airgunners will instantly link its stylish woodwork and eye-pleasing contours with the trendy lines of its Raider stablemates, while veterans
like me will see a look of Patriot and Vulcan in it - all time-proven models that belong to the pedigree line of Webley fore-runners. Hey - the
Tomahawk's beautiful fluted fore-end has even got a touch of that Seventies' favourite, the Hawk Mk. I, in it! And while it bears so many hallmarks of Webley, the new Tomahawk also carries many of the trademarks that unmistakably belong to Ivan Hancock, one of the best-known gunmaking names in the business and an influential power behind the concept of the new rifle. Head of the Webley Venom Custom Shop design team, Ivan has incorporated a multitude of 21st Century features into the Tomahawk, many of which are an evolution of the luxurious Mach 1 rifle he co-designed with Venom in the 1990s.
Only a select few could afford the massive price tag that bespoke rifles commanded - but now, thanks to Webley's mass-production
capability, a Mach 1-style rifle will be hitting gun shops for an expected price of around £220!
Although Webley might be making the odd 'tweak' here and there on the final Tomahawk that goes into production, my test rifle is as near
as makes no difference to what will eventually be going on sale shortly.
Webley tell me that they're making two versions of the Tomahawk; a no-frills beech-stocked model (shown) and a chequered walnut version
- both of which will be available in .177 and .22. They also expect to be releasing a high-powered Tomahawk for airgunners who hold
firearms certificates.
'Off ticket', the Tomahawk still cracks out a power smack bang on the legal limit and is definitely an unashamed hunter
Besides its relatively light scoped-up weight of just over 9 lbs., the Tomahawk's break-barrel design means you can cock, load and aim your
shot with the minimum of effort and maximum speed. I also like the feel of 'physically' thumbing home you pellet into the rifling.
When you draw back the 15-inch barrel, the Tomahawk's safety catch at the rear of the cylinder automatically sets to 'on' - and if, after you've nudged it 'off' with the thumb
of your right hand, you want to re-set it.. .you can!
Actually, I should say re-set it with the thumb of your trigger hand - because Webley have designed their Tomahawk's furniture to be
ambidextrous - totally!
Not only do you get a cheek-piece on either side of the butt, a beautifully-curved grip with a palm swell on each side and that lovely fluted fore-end, but you also get a thumb 'flat' on the top-side of the grip that allows you to shoot with your thumb 'up' - even if you're a
Southpaw! The muzzle is threaded to take Webley's optional BBMF silencer - but as it's not the noisiest of rifles, I'd be tempt-ed to leave in place the Venom-designed, ported barrel brake that's the poshest-looking muzzle weight I've ever seen! As is the metalwork's finish! Being a prototype, I wouldn't have expected the finish to be too brilliant - but it looked a million dollars and  is a good indication just how luxurious the metalwork will look on production versions!
Of course, looks are one thing, performance is another - but you can be sure that the Tomahawk's as good on the inside as it is on the
outside. Though you can't see it, inside the Tomahawk is newly-designed piston shape that allows no contact between the spring and cocking
mechanism - and this system really pays dividends in the rifle's super-smooth firing cycle. And another 'inside story' is the Tomahawk's trigger Based on the Mach l's, Ivan has incorporated a two-stage trigger unit that not  only has adjustments for pull pressures, but also for its length of pull! tt's also a one-piece affair which allows you to detach the trigger-block assembly in situ when you come to stripping the rifle - a luxury that earlier Webley rifles have never had. Well, that's my initial impression. I've just about got time to fire a volley before the editor has kittens!
